Curricula

The Slavic and East European Studies Program will provide the interested student with an international component in the student's undergraduate course of study. Completion of the program will indicate the acquisition of fundamental substantive and linguistic tools which will further strengthen a student's job credentials in a wide variety of occupations. The Slavic and East European Studies program will also provide the student with a solid foundation for further professional training in law, business, journalism, communications, government service, and graduate school.

B.A. Degree

Requirements for a Major in Slavic & East European Studies

Twenty-seven semester hours including the following:

SEES/HIS 2380 and SEES 2381/HIS 2381
RUS 2310 and RUS 2320 or equivalent.

  1. This language requirement may also be fulfilled by any of the languages of the areas. The countries served by Slavic and East European Studies are Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Albania, and Bulgaria.

At least fifteen semester hours selected from the following, with no more than nine hours to be taken in any one field:

  1. ECO 4338, Economic Systems of the World
  2. HIS 3340 Russia to 1861; HIS 3342 Russia since 1861; SEES/HIS 4379 The Cold War
  3. PSC 3324, World Political Systems; PSC 3325 Ethnopolitical Conflicts; PSC 4325 Asian International Relations; PSC 4344, Government and Politics of Russia
  4. REL 3334 History of Eastern Orthodoxy; REL 3345, Religions of the World
  5. RUS 3301 Russian Conversation and Composition; RUS 3302 Russian Reading Development; RUS 3V70 Special Problems; RUS 4301 Survey of Russian Literature; RUS 4302 Survey of Russian Literature, continued; RUS 4V90 Independent Study
  6. SEES/MUS 4363 Traditional Music and Culture in Europe
  7. SEES 3V70 Advanced Independent Study; SEES 4V90 Independent Readings

Required courses in other fields:

A. All major requirements in another department or study program of the University.

B. No more than six semester hours of courses listed both in Slavic and East European Studies and another department may be applied to the major requirements of that department and the major in Slavic and East European Studies.

Requirements for a Secondary Major in Slavic & East European Studies

Twenty-seven semester hours including the following:

SEES/HIS 2380 and SEES 2381/HIS 2381 - Introduction to Slavic and East European Studies I and II.
RUS 2310 and RUS 2320 or certification by CLEP through the intermediate level (2320) in another language represented by the area.
At least fifteen semester hours selected from the following, with no more than nine hours to be taken in any one field:

  1. ECO 4338, Economic Systems of the World
  2. HIS 3340 Russia to 1861; HIS 3342 Russia since 1861; SEES/HIS 4379 The Cold War

1. Area: Defined as countries served by Slavic and East European Studies. Includes all new independent states of the former Soviet Union, including the Central Asian Republics, former states of the Warsaw Pact, except East Germany, the Balkan states of former Yugoslavia, and Albania.

2. Seniors only with Instructor approval.
