Major/Minor Requirements

New Catalog Requirements (in effect as of August 2023)

Requirements for a Major in Spanish

Thirty-three semester hours, including the following:

• Three semester hours: SPA 3302 or 3304.
• Six semester hours: SPA 3305 and 3309.
• Three semester hours: SPA 3310 or 3311.
• Twenty-one semester hours: SPA electives numbered 3350 and above.

Requirements for a Secondary Major in Spanish

Thirty semester hours, including the following:

• Three semester hours: SPA 3302 or 3304.
• Six semester hours: SPA 3305 and 3309.
• Nine semester hours of 4000-level SPA courses.
• Twelve additional hours of SPA courses, six of which must be at the 3000 or 4000 level.*

*Secondary Majors in Spanish may receive up to six hours of credit for two courses at the 2000 level  (SPA 2304, 2310, 2320, 2321, 2322, 2324, or 2412). SPA 1301, 1302, 1304, and 1412 will not apply as electives on the 30 hours required in the Secondary Major.

Requirements for a Minor in Spanish

Eighteen semester hours, including the following:

• Three semester hours: SPA 3302 or 3304.
• Six semester hours: SPA 3305 and 3309.
• Three semester hours: SPA 3310 or 3311.
• Six semester hours of electives, of which a maximum of three semester hours may be from SPA 2304, 2320, 2321, 2322, or 2324. Otherwise, electives must be numbered SPA 3350 and above.

Requirements for Catalog years 2022-2023 and earlier

Requirements for a Major in Spanish

Thirty-three semester hours, including the following:

1. SPA 3302, 3305, 3309, and 4330.
2. Three semester hours: SPA 3310 or 3311.
3. Nine semester hours: SPA 3350, 3352, 3354, or 3356.
4. Three semester hours: SPA 4303 or 4304.
5. Six semester hours: SPA 4305, 4315, 4362, 4363, 4364, 4366, 4372, 4375, 4376, 4378, or 4388.

Requirements for a Secondary Major in Spanish

Thirty semester hours of Spanish with twenty-four of these hours at the 3000-4000 level including the following:

1. SPA 3302, 3305, 3309, and 4330.
2. Six semester hours of additional 4000 level SPA electives
3. Secondary Majors in Spanish may receive up to six hours of credit for two courses at the 2000 level from SPA 2304, 2310, 2320, 2321, and 2322. SPA 1301, 1302, and 1412 will not apply as electives on the 30 hours required in the Secondary Major.
4. Any other 6-12 hours from the 3000-4000 level.

Requirements for a Minor in Spanish

Eighteen semester hours including the following:

1. SPA 3302, 3305, and 3309.
2. Three semester hours: SPA 3310 or 3311.
3. Three semester hours: SPA 3350, 3352, 3354, or 3356.
4. Three semester hours of 4000-level Spanish elective.

Requirements for a Minor in World Affairs

Eighteen semester hours including the following:

1. Six semester hours of foreign language at the 2000 level or above.
2. Three semester hours selected from Group I: ANT 1310; ENG 2306; HIS 1305; HIS 1307; GEOG 1300; MLC 1101, 3101 (Global Communities - No more than six hours of MLC will apply on the minor.)
3. Three semester hours selected from Group II: ANT/ENV 4311; ANT/ENV 4327; ECO/GEOG/INB 3330; ECO 3331; ECO/AST/INB 4338; ENV/ANT 4310; FCS 4310; FCS 4352; FCS 4356; GEOG/SOC 3365; INB 3305; INB 3333; PCS 3324; PSC 3325; MLC 3101 (Global Communities - No more than six hours of MLC will apply on the minor.)
4. Three semester hours selected from Group III: ENG 3375; ENG 4379; FDM 3351; JOU 3387; MLC 3300; MUS 3321; MUS/ANT 4360; MUS 4366; REL 3345; THEA 3322; MLC 3101 (Global Communities - No more than six hours of MLC will apply on the minor.)
5. Three additional 3000-4000 level semester hours selected from Groups II or III.

The World Affairs minor consists of eighteen semester hours including nine hours of advanced work. The courses in Group I form the foundation for subsequent courses in the minor. Courses emphasize global concerns in the discipline and give attention to at least two of the following geographic areas: Europe, Asia, South America, the Middle East, and Africa. A minimum of nine hours at the 3000 and 4000 level is required. Additional courses may be considered for inclusion in this minor.
