Spanish (SPA)

1301 - Elementary Spanish (TCCNS: SPA 1411)  Prerequisite(s): Appropriate score on departmental placement exam or departmental approval.  

Introduction to the Spanish language and cultures: pronunciation, grammar, reading of simple texts, and conversation. 

*1302 - Elementary Spanish (TCCNS: SPA 1412)
Prerequisite(s): SPA 1301,  Appropriate score on departmental placement exam or departmental approval.

Continuation of SPA 1301.

1304 - Elementary Spanish for Heritage Speakers  Prerequisite(s): Appropriate score on departmental placement exam or departmental approval.  

Intended for students who have prior exposure to Spanish but have not studied the language formally. Instruction in Spanish as used in the academic and professional world and development of historical consciousness about the Hispanic presence in the USA. May be substituted for SPA 1301 and/or SPA 1302 and used in fulfillment of the FL req.

*1412 - Accelerated Elementary Spanish
Prerequisite(s): Appropriate score on departmental placement exam or departmental approval.

An intensive course in first-year college Spanish, especially for students with prior years of high school Spanish. Covers the content of SPA 1301 and 1302 in a single semester. As grammar is reviewed, an emphasis is placed on the major skill areas (ACTFL Guidelines): reading, writing, listening, speaking, and cultural awareness.

 2304 - Intermediate Spanish for Heritage Speakers
Prerequisite(s): SPA 1304, appropriate score on departmental placement exam or consent of instructor. 

Designed for students who have prior exposure to Spanish but may not have studied it formally. Review of grammar, exploration of SPA-speaking cultures, and practice at intermediate level proficiency to develop speaking and writing skills for professional contexts. May be substituted for SPA 2310 and/or SPA 2320 and used in fulfillment of the FL req.

2310 - Intermediate Spanish (TCCNS: SPA 2311)
 Prerequisite(s): SPA 1302 or 1412, appropriate score on departmental placement exam, or departmental approval.

Conversation, composition, cultural readings, and grammar review.

2320 - Exploring the Spanish-Speaking World (TCCNS: SPA 2312)
Pre-requisite(s): SPA 2310, appropriate score on departmental placement exam, or departmental consent  

An exploration of the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world with continued practice in listening, speaking, reading, and writing Spanish at the intermediate level. Class conducted in Spanish, with emphasis on developing conversational skills. Topics vary by section but may include Pop Culture, Music, Film, Literature, Art, Social Media, Journalism of the Spanish-speaking world.

2321 - Intermediate Spanish for Health Professions
Prerequisite(s): SPA 2310 or appropriate score on departmental placement exam; or departmental approval.

Development of intermediate-level skills in comprehension, speaking, reading, writing, and cultural interpretation with an emphasis on medical and scientific issues for prospective medical and healthcare professionals. May be substituted for SPA 2320. Must be taken in residence at Baylor in order to count toward the Certificate in Spanish for Health Professions.

2322 - Spanish for Christian Ministry
Prerequisite(s): SPA 2310 or appropriate score on departmental placement exam or departmental approval.

Development of vocabulary, grammar, composition, and conversation skills in Spanish for students interested in Christian ministry, using the Bible and related religious materials. May be substituted for SPA 2320.

2324 - Spanish for Business  Prerequisite(s): SPA 2304 or 2310; or appropriate score on departmental placement examination; or departmental approval.                         

 Development of communication skills at the intermediate and low-advanced proficiency levels for reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Focus on using Spanish in Business contexts and examine the business cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.

2412 - Accelerated Intermediate Spanish   Prerequisite(s): SPA 1412 or placement into SPA 2310 or 2320 and departmental approval. 

Intensive intermediate Spanish course geared toward strong language learners. Content of Spanish 2310 and 2320 in one semester. Continued development of Spanish language skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Emphasis on cultural and literary readings. May be substituted for SPA 2310 and SPA 2320 and used in fulfillment of the foreign language requirement.

3001 - Spanish for Health Professions Certificate Project Prerequisite(s): SPA 2321, and 3302.  

An individually driven project to be carried out in tandem with a Spanish course at the 3000 or 4000 level. Subject matter must be health-related and the project must be completed in Spanish. Approval of the Director of the Certificate in Spanish for Health Professions is required.

3301  Conversation and Composition: Spanish for Christian Ministry  (3)  Pre-requisite(s): SPA 2304, 2320, 2321, 2322, 2324 or 2412; or appropriate score on departmental placement exam; or consent of division director.  

Development of vocabulary, grammar, composition, and conversation skills in Spanish for students interested in Christian ministry, using the Bible and readings of a spiritual nature. This course includes an Engaged Learning Component.

3302 - Conversation and Composition
Prerequisite(s):  SPA 2304, 2320, 2321, 2322, 2324 or 2412; or appropriate score on departmental placement exam; or consent of division director.

A bridge course between the second and fourth years in the development of oral and written proficiency in Spanish. Topics vary by section.

3304 - Advanced Spanish for Heritage Speakers  Prerequisite(s): SPA 2304, appropriate score on the departmental placement exam, or consent of instructor.  

Designed for students who have prior exposure to Spanish but may not have studied it formally. Readings and discussions about Spanish-speaking communities worldwide and practice at advanced-level proficiency to develop speaking and writing skills for professional contexts. May be substituted for SPA 3302.

3305 - Introduction to Hispanic Literature
Prerequisite: SPA 2320, 2321, 2322, 2324, 2412, 3302, or 3304; or appropriate score on departmental placement examination; or departmental approval.

Introduction to the tools of literary criticism and practice in stylistic analysis of Spanish texts.

3309 - Introduction to Spanish Linguistics
Prerequisite(s): SPA 2320, 2321, 2322, 2324, 2412, 3302, or 3304;  or appropriate score on departmental placement examination; or departmental approval.

An introduction to the study of language and linguistics in general and of the sounds, structure, and meaning of Spanish in particular.

3310 - Spanish Culture and Civilization
Prerequisite(s): SPA 3302, 3304 or consent of division director.

Study of Spanish history and culture.

3311 - Latin American Culture and Civilization
Prerequisite(s): SPA 3302, 3304, or consent of division director.

Study of Spanish-American history and culture.

3350 - Medieval and Early Modern Iberian Literature
Prerequisite(s): SPA 3305 or consent of division director.

Study of literary selections from the Middle Ages through the seventeenth century; readings, lectures, and reports.

3352 - Modern and Contemporary Spanish Literature
Prerequisite(s): SPA 3305 or consent of division director.

Study of literary selections from the eighteenth century to the present time; readings, lectures, and reports.

3354 - Latin American Literature from Conquest to Independence
Prerequisite(s): SPA 3305 or consent of division director.

Study of literary selections from the Spanish conquest to 1880; readings, lectures, and reports.

3356 - Modern Latin American Literature
Prerequisite(s): SPA 3305 or consent of division director.

Study of literary selections from 1880 to the present; readings, lectures, and reports.

3V9R - Research Prerequisite(s): Consent of instructor.

Undergraduate research undertaken with the supervision of a faculty member. May be taken for a maximum of 6 hours.

4303 -  Sounds of Spanish: Introduction to Spanish Phonetics and Phonology
Prerequisite(s): SPA 3309.

The sounds of Spanish and the formation of its words, and the relationship between these two, morphophonology. It includes pronunciation and transcription of Spanish.

4304 - Structures of Spanish: Introduction to Spanish Syntax and Morphology
Prerequisite(s): SPA 3309.

Spanish word order and sentence formation, phrasal structures, and constructions that are different from English.

4305 - Spanish in Context: Introduction to Spanish Semantics and Pragmatics
Prerequisite(s): SPA 3309.

The study of the meaning of words, sentences, and discourse and elements of conversation including context, usage, and appropriateness.

 4306  Spanish Sociolinguistics  (3)  Pre-requisite(s): SPA 3309 or departmental permission  

Study of the close relationship between language and society and its implications in Spanish-speaking communities. Introduction to the methodologies and tools of sociolinguistics.* 

4315 - Methods of Foreign Language Teaching (Cross-listed with FRE 4315 and GER 4315)

Theoretical and historical bases with practical applications in communication methodology. Introduction to professional activities and materials. Although this course cannot be counted toward the first or second teaching field, it will be counted toward a major in Spanish.

4321 - Advanced Spanish for Health Professions
Prerequisite(s): SPA 2321, 3001, 3302 or 3304; and consent of instructor.

In-depth experience with Spanish in medical contexts, including a community service-learning component, with emphasis on oral and aural proficiency.

 4325  Introduction to Idiomatic Spanish  (3)  Pre-requisite(s): SPA 3302, 3304, or approval of the division director  

Study of the usage of frequent words and constructions in the Spanish language, including idiomatic formulas and grammar points. 

4330 - The Art of Advanced Communication in Spanish
Prerequisite(s): SPA 3302; and consent of instructor.

A review of grammar applied to the writing of compositions and conversational practice.

4340 - Professional and Literary Translation  Pre-requisite(s): SPA 4325, 4330, or appropriate score on departmental placement examination; or departmental approval.

The theory and practice of translation, including poetry, short stories, and technical documents.

4350  21st Century Latin American Cinema  (3)  Pre-requisite(s): SPA 3302, 3304, and SPA 3305; or consent of division director   

Students will learn how filmmaking has represented Latin America through close analysis of both feature-length and short films and by applying methodologies and theories from humanities and the arts. Discussion will be in Spanish.

4362 - Spanish Drama of the Golden Age
Prerequisite(s): SPA 3305 or consent of division director. 

Representative playwrights of seventeenth-century Spain; extensive study of selected works. Lectures, reports, class discussions, and term papers.

4363 - Cervantes
Prerequisite(s): SPA 3305 or consent of division director.

Study of the major works of Cervantes with emphasis on Don Quixote, the cultural milieu of sixteenth and seventeenth-century Spain, and the views of present-day literary critics. Lectures, class discussions, oral reports, and term papers.

4364 - 19th Century Spanish Literature
Prerequisite(s): SPA 3305 or consent of division director.

Representative plays, poems, essays, and novels from nineteenth-century Spanish literature, emphasizing in-depth analysis of texts.

4366 - Twentieth Century Spanish Literature
Prerequisite(s): SPA 3305.

Study of representative poets, playwrights, and novelists of this century. Lectures, student reports, class discussions, and term papers.

4372 - Latin American Short Story
Prerequisite(s): SPA 3305.

An in-depth study of the outstanding eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth-century Latin American short stories in light of current practice and trends in literary analysis.

4375 - Contemporary Spanish American Theater
Prerequisite(s): SPA 3305 or consent of division director.

Major trends of Spanish American theater as reflected in the works of major contemporary playwrights. Readings, lectures, and reports.

4376 - The Spanish-American Novel
Prerequisite(s): SPA 4370, 4374, or consent of division director.

A study of the origins and development of the Spanish-American novel (from 1816 to 1915). A study of the main literary movements as reflected or found in the novel, in an approved paper or project.

4378 - Latin American Poetry
Prerequisite(s): SPA 3305.

An overview of poetic trends in Latin American literature from pre-Hispanic times to the twentieth century.

4388 - Topics in Hispanic Language and Literature
Prerequisite(s): SPA 3302 and 3305; or consent of division director.

A study of an author, work, period, genre, or current Hispanic literature or of an aspect of the Spanish language. Topic changes from semester to semester. May be repeated for credit if the topic is different.

4389  Topics in Hispanic Language and Linguistics  (3)  Pre-requisite(s): SPA 3302 and 3309 or consent of instructor  

A study of a topic related to the Spanish language or a field within Hispanic or Lusophone Linguistics. May be repeated for credit if topic is different.

4V90 - Special Problems 1 to 3 sem. hrs.
 Prerequisite(s): Consent of division director.

Independent study in Spanish language and literature in consultation with a professor. Examination and term paper. With content changed, this course may be repeated once for credit.

4V9R - Research  Prerequisite(s): Consent of the instructor. 

Undergraduate research undertaken with the supervision of a faculty member. May be taken for a maximum of 6 hours.
