German (GER)

GER 1301 - Elementary German TCCNS: GERM 1411
Introduction to the German language and culture: pronunciation, grammar, reading of simple texts, and conversation. For those with little or no previous knowledge of German. Meets five days a week. (4 credit hours)

GER 1302 - Elementary German TCCNS: GERM 1412
Prerequisite(s): GER 1301.
Continuation of GER 1301. Meets five days a week. (4 credit hours)

GER 1412 - Accelerated Elementary German
Prerequisite(s): Appropriate score on departmental placement exam or departmental approval.
An intensive course in first-year college German especially for students with two-three years of high school German. Covers the content of GER 1301 and 1302 in only one semester. Fulfills the language requirement only when combined with GER 2310 and 2320 (or the equivalent unless stipulated otherwise). As grammar is reviewed, an emphasis is placed on the major skill areas (ACTFL Guidelines): reading, writing, listening, speaking, and cultural awareness. Meets five days a week. 

GER 2310 - Intermediate German
Prerequisite(s): GER 1302 or 1412, or appropriate score on departmental placement exam, or departmental approval. 
Conversation, composition, cultural readings, and grammar review. Meets three days a week. (3 credit hours)

GER 2312 - Intermediate German for Business
Prerequisite(s): GER 1302 or 1412; or appropriate score on departmental placement exam.
Introduction to German business publications and development of communication skills within a business context. This course is designed primarily for students seeking a B.B.A. degree, but may be substituted for GER 2310 and used in fulfillment of the foreign language requirement in the College of Arts and Sciences.

GER 2320 - Intermediate German cont.
Prerequisite(s): GER 2310 or 2312 or appropriate score on departmental placement exam or departmental consent. 
Continuation of GER 2310. (3 credit hours)

GER 2412 - Accelerated Intermediate German 
Prerequisite(s): GER 1302 or GER 1412 or appropriate score on placement exam, and departmental approval.
Intensive course in Intermediate German geared towards strong language learners. The content of GER 2310 and GER 2320 in one semester. Emphasis on intermediate-level reading, writing, listening, speaking, and cultural awareness.

GER 3301 - German Conversation and Composition
Prerequisites: GER 2320 or appropriate score on departmental placement exam; or departmental approval. 
Further development of communication skills. Required of all German majors. (3 credit hours)

GER 3302 - German Reading Development 
Prerequisite(s): GER 2320 or appropriate score on departmental placement exam; or departmental approval. 
Development of German reading skills through grammar review and reading of selections from various areas of the arts and sciences. (3 credit hours)

GER 3311 - German Proficiency 
Prerequisite(s): Fourteen semester hours of German (or the equivalent of completion of GER 2320).
The systematic review of high-frequency grammar structures, acquisition of new structures, and application of stylistics in a workshop format. (3 credit hours)

GER 3341 - Introduction to German Culture: Germany in the Making
Prerequisite(s): Upper-level standing.
The history and culture of the German-speaking area, from the Romans to the present day, concentrating on what will become the nation of Germany. Taught in English.

GER 3343 - Baylor in Germany: The Dresden Experience
Prerequisite(s): GER 2310 or consent of instructor. 
Culturally-based course in the Baylor in Germany (Dresden) summer program. Emphasizes issues of German and American identities. May not be offered every summer.

GER 3345 - Introduction to German Film: German Culture from Berlin to Hollywood
Prerequisite(s): Upper-level standing. 
German culture through German film, including cinematic traditions of the Weimar Republic and prominent German directors to emigrated to the US, Nazi film, post-war cinema in E. and W. Germany, and the international media context since German unification. Taught in English.

GER 3352 - Modern German Short Prose
Prerequisite(s): Fourteen semester hours of German. 
Emphasis on German short prose fiction of the twentieth century. (3 credit hours)

GER 3353 - German Drama 
Prerequisite(s): Fourteen semester hours of German. 
Emphasis on the drama of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. (3 credit hours)

GER 3354 - German Poetry
Prerequisite(s): Fourteen semester hours of German. 
Survey of the German lyrics. (3 credit hours)

GER 3355 - Exploring the German Literary Tradition
Prerequisite(s): GER 2320 or departmental approval.
The literary tradition of the German-speaking world from 1750 to the 20th century. Classes may be organized around topics chosen by the instructor.

GER 3356 - Kontext Deutschland
Prerequisite(s): GER 2320 or equivalent; or consent of instructor
Social and political events and movements viewed through literature, creating a framework for understanding contemporary Germany and the Germans. Taught in German.

GER 3V70 - Special Problems 1 to 3 sem. hrs.
Prerequisite(s): Consent of division director. With content changed, may be repeated once for credit.

GER 4301 - Survey of German Literature
Prerequisite(s): Seventeen semester hours of German including GER 3301 or consent of instructor. 
German literature from Old High German to Enlightenment. (3 credit hours)

GER 4302 - Survey of German Literature, continued
Prerequisite(s): Seventeen semester hours of German including GER 3301 or consent of instructor. 
German literature from Enlightenment to Poetic Realism. (3 credit hours)

GER 4303 - Survey of German Literature, continued
Prerequisite(s): Seventeen semester hours of German including GER 3301 or consent of instructor. 
Survey of German literature from Naturalism to the present. (3 credit hours)

GER 4305 - German Literature of the Classical Period
Prerequisite(s): Seventeen semester hours of German including GER 3301 or consent of instructor. Masterpieces of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries with emphasis on Lessing, Schiller, and Goethe.

GER 4306 - Goethe's Faust
Prerequisite(s): Seventeen semester hours of German including GER 3301 or consent of instructor. Faust I and selected readings from Faust II.

GER 4307 - German Literature of the Nineteenth Century
Prerequisite(s): Seventeen semester hours of German including GER 3301 or consent of instructor. 
Emphasis on Romanticism.

GER 4308 - German Literature of the Nineteenth Century, continued
Prerequisite(s): Seventeen semester hours of German including GER 3301 or consent of instructor. 
Emphasis on Junges Deutschland and Realism.

GER 4309 - German Literature of the Twentieth Century
Prerequisite(s): Seventeen semester hours of German including GER 3301 or consent of instructor. 
Varied readings from modern German literature.

GER 4315 - Methods of Foreign Language Teaching (Cross-listed with FRE 4315 and SPA 4315)
Theoretical and historical bases with practical applications in communication methodology. Introduction to professional activities and materials. Does not count towards a major in German or towards the first or second teaching field. Prerequisites: Student teaching must be taken concurrently. (3 credit hours)

GER 4320 - Special Topics in German
Prerequisite(s): GER 3301 and 3302; or consent of instructor. 
Special topics of study in German literature, culture, and/or linguistics not covered by regular course offerings. Offered every semester on a rotating basis by German Division faculty. May be repeated up to four times when content differs.

GER 4V90 - Independent Study 1 - 3 hrs
Prerequisite(s): Consent of division director. 
Independent study in German language and literature in consultation with a professor. Examination and term paper. With content changed, this course may be repeated once for credit. 1 - 3 credit hours)

**GER 5370 - German for Grad Students I**
Reading of intermediate-level German texts. No previous language experience required. Limited to graduate students or to undergraduates by petition. Does not count toward foreign language requirement for undergraduate students.

**GER 5371 - German for Grad Students II**
Prerequisite(s): GER 5370 or consent of instructor. 
Continuation of GER 5370. Reading of intermediate-level German texts. No previous language experience required. Limited to graduate students or to undergraduates by petition. Does not count toward foreign language requirement for undergraduate students.

**Course description: 5370/71, are two-semester summer intensive courses that will be offered during Summer II only. Students will learn the essentials of pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar to enable them to read and comprehend scholarly writings in German that are specific to their areas of specialization. Completion of both courses (taught concurrently) and a grade of “B,” or higher, in the second class (GER 5371) will satisfy the requirement for reading knowledge in a foreign language for most of those degree programs at Baylor University that have a foreign language proficiency requirement.  (Note:  Check your degree program to determine if this method is valid for you.  If taking an Oral and a Reading Examination as required by your degree program, you may still take the courses as preparation for the reading portion of the exam.)
