From Cumbia to Mariachi: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage
The Division of Spanish and Portuguese celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with two events highlighting Hispanic dance and music. “¡Baila, Baylor!,” organized by Professor Gloria Smith, featured Dallas’ Kumbala Dance Studio, with instructors performing for the audience before teaching students the basics of salsa and cumbia
The “Mariachi Masterclass,” organized annually by Professor Patricia Escamilla, shared the rich musical traditions and cultural significance behind Mexico’s beloved art form of music. The highlight of the masterclass was a live performance by the Osos Dorados, Baylor’s own Mariachi band.
